Barcolana Classic – Trofeo SIAD: the elegance of the Gulf of Trieste
The wind never filled in, but the parade of vintage, classic and Spirit of Tradition yachts in the San Giusto basin showed once again why this regatta is the soul of the world’s largest sailing event.

Some regattas are decided on the racecourse. Others are decided long before the starting gun, in the shipyards, in the restorations and in the patience of owners who keep wooden hulls alive for decades. The Barcolana Classic – Trofeo SIAD belongs to the second kind. In 2026 the Gulf of Trieste offered no wind on regatta day, and the Race Committee had to cancel the race. Even so, the morning made its point.
At half past ten, as tradition requires, the fleet sailed in procession through the San Giusto basin, in front of the waterfront and the crowds that fill Trieste every October. Gaff rigs and Marconi sloops passed side by side: yachts that have crossed oceans, small boats from the Lošinj tradition, lovingly restored local hulls, designs by Carlo Sciarrelli and boats that wrote the history of the IOR. For those watching from the quay, no ranking was needed to understand what they were seeing.
The Classic takes place every year on the Saturday before the Barcolana, and it is a way of telling the story of the Gulf. The great Sunday race was born in 1969 with only a few dozen boats, and the start was reportedly given with a red rag. By its fiftieth edition, in 2018, it had become the most crowded regatta in the world. In 2026 it gathered 1,858 boats and more than 15,000 sailors on a single starting line, between the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano clubhouse and Miramare Castle.
Its roll of honour reads like an anthology of modern sailing. Raul Gardini’s Il Moro di Venezia won it three times. Mitja Kosmina dominated with Gaia Legend in the mid-1990s and was still fighting for victory thirty years later. Neville Crichton’s Alfa Romeo, Esimit Europa 2 with Jochen Schümann and its five consecutive wins, and Deep Blue, which in 2022 gave the trophy to an American boat and a woman owner and helmswoman, Wendy Schmidt, for the first time. And then the Benussi family of Trieste, whose name runs through the list from one generation to the next.
The Classic holds the other half of that story. Here the protagonist is Carlo Sciarrelli, the Triestine designer who gave the Adriatic some of its most elegant wooden hulls, and whose boats race in a category of their own. Here too sail the passere, the traditional Adriatic boats. In 2018, for the fiftieth anniversary, SIAD and the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano built a new one, Barcolana50, following the old construction methods. The 2026 edition also marked ten years of partnership between the SIAD Group and the regatta. The Classic is part of the Adriatic Classic Trophy, together with the Hannibal Classic and the Trofeo Città di Trieste.
A classic yacht does not stop being one because the wind didn’t come. It waits, as it has always done. And the Gulf of Trieste, with its Bora and its long autumn calms, will have its race again next October.
The Comité International de la Méditerranée warmly congratulates the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano, the SIAD Group, the owners and the crews who brought their yachts to Trieste to keep alive a heritage that belongs to the whole Mediterranean.
